How feasible would it be for me to work remote to extend my vacation

Im in the beginning stages of planning a trip from the east coast of the US to New Zealand/Australia. Unfortunately, I only have two weeks worth of vacation to use for the year and I realize that that is just not enough time when you factor in the flight time. My manager is perfectly okay with me working remote in order to extend my trip time after explaining the situation to him. The only caveat is that I HAVE to work eastern standard time hours so basically I would have to work throughout the night. Im actually surprised he was okay with this because I had another coworker try something similar and ended up just taking 3 weeks off while aboard because the time difference was too great. My manager was pretty upset with the coworker for quite sometime after he returned.

By doing this I could extend my trip up to a 4 weeks, but at the same time I just dont know how that would work out because I would either be a zombie during that time or sleep during the day and miss out on actually enjoying my vacation during that time period.

If you were in my situation what would you do? And has anyone here had a similar situation? Im starting to realize that I would have to be unemployed to actually enjoy my trip. :/
