Last year, my wife and I spent three weeks driving round peninsular Malaysia, and had an absolutely amazing time. The food, the people, the scenery, the culture, all of it wonderful.

Wed like to do something similar this year – we love the freedom of having our own car. Malaysia was great in that it had a balance of being a cheap country, but being easy to drive yourself. Whenever we look for ideas of other countries to do something similar, all the expensive countries come up – USA, Australia, New Zealand etc. We live in the UK and want to go further afield than Europe.

So my question is, what countries/regions are worth visiting that are cheap but safe and easy to get around by hire car? Were considering going around Bali (away from the built-up areas), but any other ideas would be welcome. Wed have about three weeks to do it.
